The Rotary Club of Eleuthera presented on Prevention of Childhood Obesity at James Cistern and P.A. Gibson Primary Schools.  The presentations were facilitated by PP Sherrin Cooper.  The objective of the presentation was to bring awareness to the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children age 5-17 years old.  This puts these children at high risk for developing NCDs.  To educate the children on the causes of obesity.  One of the causes is behavioral factors inclusive of physical inactivity and unhealthy diets.  Students were encouraged to read food labels so they can be more knowledgeable about what they are eating.
Emphasis was placed on the importance of reducing sugar intake by choosing healthier foods and snacks, drinking water, sleep/rest, exercising, and having a yard garden. Children need nutritious foods to grow and to learn.  When they become adults, nutritious foods are needed to remain productive and healthy. Apples, oranges, bananas, coco-plumbs, dillies, and water were donated to each school.
